Gum Disease

Gum disease is a common problem largely caused by plaque building up on the teeth and gums. Plaque is a sticky film made up of bacteria and food debris which over time will harden to become scale or tartar. It is the bacteria and the body’s response to their presence in more advanced gum disease that leads to the bone around teeth shrinking back until they eventually fall out. Gum Treatment

The health of your gums is just as important as the health of your teeth.  Your dentist or hygienist can offer you treatment to help combat gum disease.  This may be straightforward advice on techniques to effectively clean your gums and teeth, to deep cleaning under your gums whilst you are numb.

Treatment involves removing the plaque and scale which may have built up on the roots of teeth beneath the gums in conjunction with oral hygiene instruction to help you keep things clean afterwards. We will measure the gaps between your teeth and gums and only take necessary x-rays so that we can measure the success of your treatment, if necessary we will provide your treatment whilst you are numb to make the process as comfortable as possible and give you follow-up support to help you maintain the improvements you make.

Helpful advice can be found on the BSP website in their patient section. (Offsite link - opens in a new window)
