Have you ever wished that you could straighten your teeth without anyone else knowing?
The beauty of Invisalign is that the aligners are practically invisible, allowing the wearer to adjust their teeth without advertising the fact to the entire world.
If you are interested in straightening your teeth with Invisalign, then visit us at our Halifax practice for a consultation with an Invisalign dentist.
Invisalign is an orthodontic treatment system that uses bespoke clear aligners to straighten teeth instead of fixed brackets and wires.
While there are now many companies that offer clear aligner treatment, Invisalign is the one that started it all. Some 9 million people have already been treated with Invisalign and love their results.
To start Invisalign treatment, you will be fitted for a set of clear aligners that you will wear over your upper and lower teeth for at least 22 hours each day.
Invisalign aligners are removable, so you can easily take them out as needed to clean your teeth and to eat snacks and meals. The aligners are designed from a digital scan of your teeth, so they will fit almost perfectly. The fit isn't quite perfect because the aligners are supposed to feel tight on your teeth. They are carefully designed to put pressure on specific points of specific teeth, and this is how the aligners move them.
You will wear each set of aligners for about two weeks until your teeth have shifted to the point that your current set of aligners feel loose. At this point, you are ready to begin wearing the next set of aligners in your treatment plan. Each new set moves your teeth a little further along. Depending on the complexity of your case and the number of aligner sets in your treatment plan, your Invisalign treatment may take anywhere from six to eighteen months.
Here are the basic steps in the process of straightening your teeth with Invisalign treatment at Skircoat Green Dental Practice:
Your journey begins with your first visit to our practice. We will give your teeth a thorough scale-and-polish and carefully examine the health of your mouth. We will also take the time to sit down and talk with you about what kind of results you hope to achieve with Invisalign treatment. You will get the chance to ask questions and describe what your ideal smile looks like, and we will let you know what the best treatment options are for you. The dentist will take a scan of your teeth and run this through Invisalign's patented treatment planning software to generate a preview of what your smile will look like when your treatment is finished.
Once the dentist approves Invisalign treatment for you, we will go over the recommended treatment plan with you including: the estimated treatment time, a quote for the cost of your care and any other dental treatment you may need prior to wearing clear aligners.
If you decide to move ahead with your bespoke Invisalign treatment plan, then we will deduct the cost of your initial consultation and professional cleaning from your total treatment cost.
When your aligners are ready, we will call you into our practice to pick them up. At this appointment, we will show you how to insert and remove your aligners, teach you how to clean them and explain what you can expect when you start wearing them.
You can begin your treatment as soon as you get your Invisalign aligners. Aim to wear both your upper and lower aligners for at least 22 hours per day. Your aligners should be in place at all times unless you are cleaning your teeth or aligners or eating anything other than plain water. Eating with your aligners can damage or stain them and increase the likelihood of developing tooth decay over the course of your treatment.
Depending on your unique treatment needs, we may invite you into our practice once every four to eight weeks to check on the progress of your Invisalign treatment. This brief check-up will help us make sure that everything is going according to plan. We will make recommendations if it appears that your teeth are not moving as quickly as expected. We will also give you advice that can keep your treatment moving forward and keep your mouth comfortable as your teeth continue to shift.
Your treatment will be complete before you know it! The results may appear so gradually that you do not notice them at first, but you will be delighted to compare the 'before and after' pictures. All those months you spent diligently wearing your aligners will have paid off! Now that your treatment is complete, we will provide you with a retainer that will help you maintain the progress you have made and prevent your teeth from drifting back into their former positions.
Invisalign works well for many people in need of orthodontic treatment.
These clear aligners can help you whether you have many crowded teeth, multiple gaps, or just one tooth that is twisted out of alignment.

Invisalign and traditional metal braces are both effective orthodontic solutions. They accomplish the same thing using different appliances. Visiting an orthodontist or an Invisalign dentist is the best way to find out which of these two orthodontic techniques will work best for you.
The total treatment time for Invisalign varies from person to person, but most people complete their treatment within 12 months. Teeth with mild alignment issues can be corrected in as little as six months. More serious cases can take up to 18 months, perhaps even longer. Schedule an initial consultation with an Invisalign dentist to get a treatment time estimate based upon your individual needs.
There is no need to panic if you end up losing or damaging one of your Invisalign aligners. Contact your local Invisalign dental team right away for advice. If you are on the verge of starting a new set of aligners, our team might advise you to move on to your next set. If it will be some weeks before your teeth are ready for their next set, however, then we may advise you to wear the aligner from the previous set to help your teeth stay in their current alignment until we provide you with a replacement.
Happily, you do not have to worry about avoiding any specific foods when you have treatment with Invisalign. The important thing is to take out your aligners any time you eat food or drink anything that is not plain water. As long as your aligners are not in your mouth, they cannot be damaged by the foods you eat, and you are free to enjoy all the foods you love.
Yes, Invisalign treatment is generally safe for teeth that have had restorative dental treatments. Removable clear aligners move individual teeth without the need to bind all the teeth together with metal wires. You still need to discuss your individual treatment needs with an Invisalign dentist beforehand, however, to make sure that your current dental work will not be affected by the aligners.
