Are you missing one or more teeth?

Tooth loss can make you feel self-conscious about showing your smile.

Besides affecting your appearance, missing teeth can also negatively impact your health. Gaps in your smile can increase your risk of oral disease, and they may make it difficult to chew the nutritious foods your body needs.

Replacing lost teeth can help you regain control over your dental health and feel confident in the way your smile looks.

Dental bridges

A bridge is a cost-effective way to fill the gap in your smile.

It’s a dental restoration that rests on natural teeth in your mouth for support while suspending one or two false teeth over the empty space.

In traditional dental bridges, the supporting teeth are covered with crowns which are connected to the false tooth (or teeth) in the middle.

Sometimes, missing teeth can be replaced with an adhesive bridge. This type of bridge does not require us to put crowns on natural teeth. Instead, the false tooth attaches to the neighbouring teeth with a frame that is cemented to the backs of the teeth. Thus, an adhesive bridge is non-invasive and easy to replace in the event that it does come off.

Your dental bridge may be made from:

How do you know which type of bridge is right for you?

When you visit Skircoat Green Dental Practice in Halifax, we will complete a thorough evaluation of your dental health and let you know which kind of treatment we recommend for replacing your missing teeth.

We’ll ask you about your aesthetic smile preferences and tell you which restoration will help you achieve your goals.

A dental bridge can last you a long time, as long as you take good care of it. Our team will show you the best way to clean around and under your bridge to keep the surrounding teeth and gum tissue healthy.

Dentures

If you have no natural teeth left or if you need to have your remaining teeth extracted, then a full denture may be right for you.

We also provide partial dentures which can replace one or more missing teeth in situations where a dental bridge is not advisable. We make our dentures from either pure acrylic, or acrylic with a metal frame.

Dentures are excellent tooth replacements because they are non invasive and can give you your confidence back. With a little practice, you can enjoy eating a wide variety of foods with a denture. You will even be able to smile with pride, again!

Whether you get a full or partial denture, we recommend you take out your appliance at night before going to sleep. This gives your mouth a chance to rest and ‘breathe’ after being covered by a denture all day. Good denture hygiene also includes cleaning your denture daily.

A denture may be the perfect tooth replacement option for you, or we may recommend that you wear a denture as an interim solution while we help prepare your mouth for a different restoration such as a bridge or implant.

Dental implants

An implant is a whole-tooth replacement that functions as both the root and crown of a tooth. Implants are independent restorations that do not require support from any of the surrounding teeth.

You can replace one or more missing teeth with individual implants, but implants can also act as supports for multi-tooth restorations like bridges and dentures.

Frequently asked questions about dentures and bridges

  • Is a dental bridge better than an implant?

Dental implants and bridges are equally effective restorations. For some people, a dental bridge is their best tooth replacement option. Others may prefer to get an implant.

Both restorations have unique advantages, and it’s important to weigh the pros and cons in light of your unique smile goals and oral health needs. When you visit us for treatment, we will help you determine which one is best for replacing your tooth.

  • Will anyone notice if I have a denture?

No one will notice that you are wearing a denture, provided it is made well. Today’s dentures are very natural-looking, and our dental team is experienced in crafting dentures that are as beautiful as they are functional.

  • How can I make my denture more stable?

It can take a little time to get used to wearing a denture. After you get a denture for the first time, you may choose to stabilise it using a denture adhesive product. With time, your confidence in your new smile will grow.

As long as your denture fits well and feels comfortable, you will not have to worry about it falling out. If you do have any issues, we are here to help you make the needed adjustments

  • How do I clean my dental bridge?

Cleaning your bridge is essential to keeping the surrounding teeth and gum tissues healthy. Visit us for a dental check-up where we will show you how to use special kinds of floss and brushes to clean around and under your bridge.

  • How do I choose between a bridge and a partial denture?

You will want to consider the pros and cons of both bridges and dentures before you make a decision. A Halifax dentist can help you compare all the factors to determine whether a fixed or removable tooth replacement is right for you.

The useful stuff.
