We offer custom teeth bleaching kits here at Skircoat Green Dental Practice that can help you get a sparkling smile you can show off with confidence.
Unlike DIY whitening or treatment by someone who is not a trained dental professional, a bleaching kit from the dentist will:
Lower the risk of side-effects like tooth sensitivity
Minimise or prevent gum irritation
Ensure your safety during treatment
Be more effective
This is what your treatment journey to whiter teeth will look like at our practice:
step 1
The very first thing we need to do is make sure your mouth is healthy enough for teeth whitening. The bleach used in our whitening system is harmless, but it can cause discomfort and irritation if it comes into contact with untreated cavities or infected gums.
The dentist will carefully examine your mouth during this initial appointment and let you know if you need any urgent treatment before you whiten your teeth. We may also recommend a professional teeth cleaning to remove plaque and tartar and to polish your teeth before you bleach them.
Once you are ready to begin, we will fit you for bespoke whitening trays. This involves taking a quick scan of your teeth which we will use to design trays that fit you perfectly.
step 2
It takes approximately 2 weeks to design and complete your bleaching trays. We will call you in to pick up your trays, show you how to wear them and demonstrate how to apply the right amount of bleaching gel.
These trays look like clear aligners or gum shields, and they will be unique to the shape of your mouth. The bespoke fit allows the whitening gel to disperse evenly on the surfaces of your teeth for optimum effect and minimal waste so that you get the most out of your whitening kit.
Your personal whitening kit includes all the bleaching gel you need to bleach your teeth for about two weeks.
step 3
Armed with the instructions for using your bleaching trays, you will be ready to start whitening your teeth right away.
We use a brand called Boutique Whitening, and it offers two whitening regimens to choose from:
Whitening your teeth every day for 1.5 hours OR
Whitening your teeth overnight while you sleep
You can choose whichever method suits your preferences and lifestyle the best. During your dental examination with the dentist, you can ask questions to find out which method will help you achieve the results you want.
Results vary from person-to-person, but most of our patients see noticeably whiter teeth within two to four weeks of starting their treatment.
Getting those sparkling white teeth is only half the battle; keeping them white may sound like the real challenge.
Fortunately, we can help you maintain your results for a long time. We will review your unique oral health and lifestyle factors and then recommend that you make some changes to keep your teeth bright and youthful-looking.
Some suggestions we give you may include:
Avoid dark-coloured foods like curry, berries, cola, coffee, tea and red wine.
Brush and floss daily to prevent dental plaque accumulation.
Schedule regular dental cleanings.
Touch up your tooth colour, as needed, with gel refills we can provide for you.

Yes, teeth whitening is a very safe cosmetic dental treatment, provided it is done by a trained and qualified dental professional. At our practice, we will thoroughly examine your teeth beforehand to make sure that they are in good condition for whitening. We design custom bleaching trays that prevent the gel from reaching your gums, and we provide detailed instructions to ensure that you can safely use the gels. With professional supervision, your teeth whitening treatment journey will be a safe one.
Sensitivity is a temporary and common side-effect of teeth whitening for many people, though not everyone experiences it. If you do struggle with sensitivity, then we will explain how you can strengthen your teeth and whiten them at a rate that keeps you comfortable throughout your treatment.
While professional whitening gel can have a powerful effect on natural teeth, it is not effective on dental restorations, unfortunately. This is because bleaching gel only lifts stains from the porous enamel of teeth and it cannot alter the permanent colour of restorations.
However, if you would like to ensure your crown matches the rest of your teeth, we recommend bleaching your teeth first. After that, we can make you a new dental crown to match your new shade so that you will never again have to worry about your crown looking too dark next to your natural teeth.
You can maintain your current tooth colour by practicing good oral hygiene and avoiding dark-coloured foods and smoking. Your teeth will naturally darken with age and exposure to pigments in food, but you can counter these effects with the occasional teeth whitening touch-up.
Professional teeth whitening treatments are normally effective to some noticeable extent for most people. Occasionally, one or more teeth cannot be bleached due to an internal injury or stain that makes them severely discoloured. When you visit our practice, the dentist will examine your teeth and let you know whether teeth whitening is worth a try. If you have any teeth that do not appear likely to respond to whitening, then we may recommend covering those teeth with dental veneers or crowns, instead.
